These are extremely severe standards, which apply both to upholstery fabrics and foam used to line elements of furniture. Furniture manufactured in accordance with this standard are resistant to fire from such sources as cigarettes, matches or gas flames. Materials manufactured in accordance with the BS 5852 standard melt but do not burn. Furthermore, all upholstered furniture must be specially marked in order to confirm they have been manufactured in accordance with the aforementioned standard.
